One benefit of self-observation, a yogic principle, is that when you begin to notice a pattern it's a lot easier to break that pattern. On that mat that might present itself as "oh, everytime I practice balancing poses I hold my breath," in meditation it might show up as "wow, my mind keeps going back to a place of resentment" in your life is might present as "hmm, I tend to get headaches on my longest work days." . Whatever the pattern is, the first step is to recognize that there is one. Then you can change it and do something different. Like breathing during balancing, finding gratitude to replace resentment or taking steps to self care on your work days. Different feels different, which for some feels uncomfortable, but don't avoid the discomfort. Savor. It’s Day 16 of our 30 day yoga journey back HOME, and today’s sweet practice invites us to savor each and every breath, movement, and moment - on the mat and off. On the mat, we first focus on savoring our exhales before we even begin to move. We typically focus on finding expansion as we inhale, but what about the release? What if you could let that tension go and feel its effect throughout your self? Go on; try it. Really enjoy it. Savor it. We carry this sweet breath throughout our practice as we move lovingly through each gentle asana. We keep low and slow, savoring our breath and each movement as we find connection to the earth. We allow one moment to bleed into the next on the mat, and we wonder how we can carry this into our day. Instead of holding a grudge, can you let it go with your exhale? Instead of dreading the day ahead, can you savor the fact that you get to experience another day? Can we all savor the fact that it’s Friday before a three-day weekend? Whatever’s going on today, take a moment for yourself. Stop, inhale, exhale, and savor it. See you tomorrow, friends.

“You have to laugh at yourself, because you’d cry your eyes out if you didn’t”- Emily Saliers, Indigo Girls ⠀⠀ Ever make a mistake and you feel like the world’s biggest loser, then you put it into perspective and realize everybody makes mistakes and life goes on? ⠀⠀ That happened to me yesterday. I’ll spare you all the details, but long story short- I was on my own w/ the goats, thought I knew what I was doing, and before I knew it, they were in control. Nobody was hurt, nobody escaped- but they all ran into the barn before their pre-bedtime walk, and that is not the routine, and so I did throw them off their schedule. I know it doesn’t sound like a big deal. But I was just saying, how I feel like I’m really getting the hang of goats, and then this! ⠀⠀ Just as I was trying to figure out what to do, another volunteer unexpectedly showed up. She kind of berated me and made me feel terrible- although I know she was just annoyed, and also trying to explain to me how I could have avoided the mistake. ⠀⠀ Anyway- I wanted to post about it because I think it’s human to make a mistake. And there’s no reason to feel terrible as long as you fess up, try to fix it, and don’t repeat it. ⠀⠀ And also, I guess I’d say the things I learned are: ⠀⠀ 1. Close the barn door before walking the goats⠀⠀ 2. It’s best to not try to manage 14 goats on your own⠀⠀ 3. If you do need to manage 14 goats on your own, lead the big ones to the lower paddock before trying to walk the smaller ones 4. A D V E N T U R E A new dawn, a new beginning, a new adventure awaits for me today as I start my new journey training to be a yoga teacher @academy_for_yoga_training One thing I have realised in life is to capture the opportunities that come your way. And go for it. I have met so many amazing people on my yoga journey so far, who have inspired me to deepen my practice and train to be a yoga teacher. But I am utterly plagued by self-doubt that I’m going to be absolutely 💩 at teaching yoga. How the f*** am I going to remember all the Sanskrit, physiology and postures I need to learn? Despite the challenges ahead and voices of self-doubt, I’m ready to embark on the next journey of training to be a yoga teacher. It’s day 2 of our #YogisYamaNiyamas2 challenge. The second Yama is Satya - the Sanskrit word for truth. Being truthful in thought, speech and action, and pairing it with our first Yama - ahimsa (non-violence). Sometimes it’s really hard to be honest with yourself. Sometimes it’s really hard to be honest with other people. Right? Why is this? For me it comes from a place of fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of not knowing how something is going to turn out, or how another person will react. But you know what? You can’t control how other people react, or how they see you. . I’ve started asking myself ‘what’s the worst that could happen’? And more often then not, it’s really not as big of a deal as the ’fear monster’ made it out to be. One year ago today, I stepped foot into my first yoga class. The lights were turned off and everyone was laying down on their mat. The class had already started. I was late! I squeezed myself next to two ladies who kindly moved their mat over. I laid there with my eyes closed, not knowing what to expect. I flowed to the instructor’s words to the best of my abilities, while gazing at others, because I had no idea of what to do. Eventually, I was moving and breathing. I thought, “wow, this is so nice.” Then, we laid down for savasana. My mind surrendered itself to the rise and fall of my chest as I breathed in and out. I’ve never felt such tranquility, such peace and stillness. Before yoga, I was in a dark place. I was so lost and confused, so full of self hate, with no idea of what to do or where to go. However, when I walked out, I was changed forever. I found my passion after one hour of my first yoga class. This passion of mine, has allowed me to live my life more joyously and more gracefully. It has given me the confidence and self-love that I so desperately needed. I am forever grateful and blessed, to have found my passion, my outlet, my peace and tranquility. It allows me to let go of what no longer serves me. Yoga offers self-reflection, the practice of kindness and self-compassion, and continued growth and self-awareness. It’s not an exercise. It’s an exploration of the mind, the body and the spirit.
