This letter was written by Charles W. Manning, at Hancock Maryland, December 5th 1861, 158 years ago yesterday. Charles enlisted in Co. B, of the 13th Massachusetts infantry Regiment. Before the war he was an 18 year old Hatter working in Boston. This is one of my favorite letters for multiple reasons, for the content, and that he written descriptively As if he was writing in his journal, rather than to his brother. He wrote two letters and sent them both in one envelope of which you can see, he starts with showing his own bit of personality. Then going into perfect content describing camp life, and his experience marching from Williamsport to Hancock. After that he explains going across the river into Bath by flatboats to scout, gathering Chickens and Turkeys through searching Barns and houses. They notice a carriage coming down the road, and a Corporal that was there told him stay or he’d shoot, finding out he was a “secesh”. By the name of Swan, and aiding the Confederate Army. Really fascinating to hold, and read. The 13th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment lost 4 officers and 117 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 40 enlisted men to disease in the Civil War. It is honored by a monument at Gettysburg. If interested message to know more. 𝐕𝐈𝐂𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐀𝐍 𝐄𝐆𝐘𝐏𝐓𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐀 📜 . . . Naturally, the Victorians were very curious about Egyptian mummies, but as the early part of the 19th century began to fade these concealed corpses became objects of increased interest as the Enlightenment Egyptomania of the scholar Champollion and his peers gave way to morbid fascination and fear, driven by the 40-year mourning of Queen Victoria and costly wars. Ancient Egyptians believed in giving their dead an appropriate send-off, constructing elaborate mausolea to them, and entombing their corpses with personal possessions that might assist them in the afterlife. For the Victorians, with their equally morbid and complex mourning rituals, the example of these ancient people was one to follow – perhaps they even saw something of themselves in this ancient empire, its ambition, wealth and grandeur, and saw its collapse as a potent reminded that even the greatness of Britain will one day fall to dust, just as Champollion’s beloved Napoleon had done. Throughout the 19th century, Egyptian influences could be found in women’s mourning jewellery, which often featured obelisks or scarabs (even real scarabs, with desiccated beetles being a perfectly regular fixture on earrings), and on tombs, mausolea, cemetery gates and even entire graveyards, which had an Egyptian style of architecture or decorative features. Most prominent of these is London’s Highgate Cemetery. The cemetery became a tourist attraction almost instantly and its otherworldly atmosphere was part of the allure, as William Justyne wrote in his 1865 Guide to Highgate Cemetery: “As we enter the massive portals, and hear the echo of our footsteps intruding on the awful silence of this cold, stony death-palace, we might almost fancy ourselves trading through the mysterious corridors of an Egyptian temple.” — historyanswers.co.uk

And around the castle there are servants' dwellings. Servants are hunting in a forest, brew good beer and pay tribute to the feudal lord. At least I think so... Although I can say for sure about beer - they brew it very well. ⠀ #castle #fort #fortress #ancient #medieval #traditional #europe #chateldon #france #auvergne #forest #autumn #roofs #heritage #old #auvergnetourism #nature #mountains #hilltop #majestic

Tavern on the Green, located on 2566 Hylan Blvd., New Dorp, was one of the hottest spots on Staten Island. Three presidents -- Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and George Bush -- and movie stars such as Loretta Young and Joan Crawford all dined there. It was the place to "see" and be seen. It's the place Bobby Thomson chose to have dinner Oct. 3, 1951, after having hit ``The Shot Heard Round the World'' earlier in the day. George Bamberger, a Great Kills native, who managed the Mets in 1981 and a portion of the 1982 season, dropped in from time to time during that period, especially when the Mets played a day game during the week. Robert F. Kennedy stopped at the Tavern during his successful campaign for senator from New York. The Tavern was eventually sold to a company of restaurateurs who never enjoyed the success of the original owners. The company went into arrears on its mortgages and taxes and the original owners the Coppotelli family reacquired it in 1977. About a month later, in February 1977, it was destroyed by fire. #Historia #History #Historico #Historical #Historiador #Historian #Cultura #Culture #HistoriaAntigua #AncientHistory #MilitaryHistory #Aprendiendo #Aprendizaje #SabiasQue #ElDato #HistoryLover #HistoriaUniversal #CulturaGeneral #Militar #SPQR #ImperioRomano #Roma #JulioCesar #Galia #Galos #Ilustracion #HistoriaMilitar #Warrior

April 3, 1980 ⛴️ The ferryboat John F. Kennedy was jammed with passengers as it pulled into the St. George ferry terminal during the evening rush. ⛴️ The John F. Kennedy ferry was set to retire in fall of 2019. The retirement has been delayed due to hurricane damage to the replacement boats shipyard. Commissioned in 1965 and named after the late president, the ferry is currently the oldest boat in the fleet. It will be replaced by the Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis ferryboat. Despite its age, the JFK boat is considered one of the safest in the current fleet, according to the ship's captain. Its popular open-air features, like outdoor promenades and extended foredecks, have inspired the design of three coming boats. On 6th December 1921 the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed, formally putting an end to the Irish War of Independence or Anglo-Irish War (1919 - 21) and establishing southern Ireland as a self-governing "dominion" of the British Empire.⁣ ⁣ Like my previous post, this story happened in part during a boat journey:⁣ The Irish negotiating team took the terms of the treaty to Ireland on 3rd December 1921. President De Valera was not impressed that the negotiators had accepted a draft agreement that compromised on both Irish unity and unconditional independence. After an all-day meeting in Dublin, the negotiating team (Michael Collins, Arthur Griffith, Eamon Duggan, George Gavin Duffy, Robert Barton, and Erskine Childers) sailed back to Britain in different boats because of their deep disagreements. Barton, Childers and Duffy left via Dublin’s North Wall, whilst Collins, Griffith and Duggan sailed from Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire).⁣ ⁣ Despite a pledge to wait for a debate on the terms of the agreement by the Dail, the negotiating team signed it at 2:20 am on 6th December 1921 after David Lloyd George’s ultimatum asked them to sign immediately or risk another war.⁣ ⁣ One of the British negotiators, F.E. Smith, Earl Birkenhead, told Collins, “I may have signed my political death warrant,” to which Collins replied, “I may have signed my actual death warrant.” ⁣ Image: The Irish delegation signs the Anglo-Irish Treaty, Hulton Archive⁣ ⁣ Sources: John Dorney, The Story of the Irish Civil War, https://www.theirishstory.com/2011/12/06/today-in-irish-history-6-december-1921-the-anglo-irish-treaty-is-signed/#.Xep4VyWnyEc⁣ ⁣ https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.history.com/.amp/this-day-in-history/irish-free-state-declared⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #angloirishwar #independence #britishempire #selfdetermination #journey #negotiatons #onthisday #otd #gcsehistory #alevelhistory #irishhistory #britishhistory #europeanhistory #dublin #london #historylover

["Hunting with eagles" - A "Burkitshi", Mongolian Khazakh hunter and his assistant in hunt, the magnificent golden eagle] . . . ~The golden eagles that live in the high Altai mountains, in far-western Mongolia, build their nests in the crags of the area’s rugged peaks—there aren’t many trees. Hunters belonging to traditional nomadic clans from the country’s Khazakh minority climb up to these crevices to capture the birds at around four years old, which is old enough to know how to hunt but young enough to be pliable to human company and training. The eagles are domesticated, fed by hand, and will live with the hunters’ families for years. ~To hunt, the men take their eagles high into the mountains so that they can scan the valleys below for foxes and other animals, which the eagles fly down to catch. (Only female birds are used, because they’re larger—with an eight-foot wingspan—and fiercer hunters.) ~The Burkitshi are a dying breed. It is estimated that there are only fifty or sixty “true” eagle hunters left. A ninety-three-year-old hunter named Orazkhan Shuinshi says that young people “want only to be inside, in the warm, and they keep their eagles just for festivals and treat them as pets.” He continued: “The people are lazy and that makes the eagles lazy. Eagles are wild fighting birds. They are not something to hang on the wall like a carpet.” ___ Source: newyorker.com Photograph by Palani Mohan. ___ #history #historic #historical #historia #historybuff #historylover #mongolia #kazakh #mongolian #eagle #eagles #learn #facts #incredible #amazing #hunt #hunting #hunter #animal #animals #wildlife #nomad #tribe #tribes #asia #asian #altai #mountain #nature #magnificent

🇫🇮Finlands Independence Day - 6th of December 🇫🇮 ⠀ ⠀ Today marks 102 years since Finland gained its indepence from Russia in 1917. The newly won independence was followed by a Civil War, between the "Reds" and the "Whites. The "Whites", commanded by C.G.E Mannerheim, eventually won the struggle after around 3 months of warfare. General Mannerheim went on to lead Finland during World War 2 as the commander-in-chief, eventually being promoted to Field Marshal and becoming Finlands president between 1944 and 1946. The first picture depicts Finnish soldiers raising the Finnish flag at the three-country cairn between Norway, Sweden and Finland on the 27th of April, 1945. "The above photo was taken of the Sex Pistols in 1977 by Janette Beckman in London, England. - In 1975, manager Malcolm McLaren put together Johnny Rotten (singer, later known as John Lydon), Paul Cook (drummer), Steve Jones (guitarist), and Glen Matlock (bassist). Later, Sid Vicious (who went by John Simon Ritchie) would join as bassist. - Initially, the band was meant to promote McLaren’s clothing store, Sex. However, their unique mix of sounds and styles became very popular in a short time. By 1976, the Sex Pistols had gained quite a large following and fan base. They quickly became the leaders of the punk movement in Britain. - They were known to record very political music. Their first single “Anarchy in the U.K.,” had extremely political overtones. Because of their disregard for propriety and certain social norms, they became a national spectacle when they used profanity on live TV. - Consequently, they were dropped by their record label, and their next deal only lasted a few days. Soon after that, they signed with Virgin Records and released their second single “God Save the Queen,” in 1977. However, their glory did not last long as the group disbanded shortly after their first record, “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols,” was released. - In 1978, the group called it quits. However, in 2006, the Sex Pistols were inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but—in keeping with their abrasive punk attitude—they did not attend the ceremony." . credit: @historyphotographed . Antônio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994). Brazilian songwriter, composer, arranger, singer, and pianist/guitarist. . Widely considered as one of the great exponents of Brazilian music, Jobim internationalized bossa nova and, with the help of important American artists, merged it with jazz in the 1960s to create a new sound with remarkable popular success. As such he is sometimes known as the "father of bossa nova". . Jobim subsequently performed in the clubs of Rio de Janeiro, transcribed songs for composers who could not write music, and arranged music for various recording artists before becoming music director of Odeon Records, one of the largest record companies in Brazil. . In 1958 he began collaborating with singer-guitarist João Gilberto, whose recording of Jobim’s song “Chega de Saudade” is widely recognized as the first bossa nova single. Although the song itself met a cold reception, the bossa nova album that bears its name—Chega de Saudade (1959)—took Brazil by storm the following year. By the early 1960s, Jobim’s music was being played around the world. . Jobim maintained a second home in the United States, where bossa nova’s fusion of understated samba pulse (quiet percussion and unamplified guitars playing subtly complex rhythms) and gentle, breathy singing with the melodious and sophisticated harmonic progressions of cool jazz found a long-lasting niche in popular music. . Jobim collaborated on many albums, such as Getz/Gilberto (1963) and Frank Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim (1967). He also recorded solo albums and composed classical works and film scores. . He was married twice: Thereza Otero Hermann (1949); Ana Beatriz Lontra (1986). He had four children. He died from a cardiac arrest caused by a pulmonary embolism. . Famous songs: Samba de uma nota só Desafinado Meditação Corcovado Garota de Ipanema Wave . Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has been a child prodigy already at a young age. Already 3 years old, he knew how to tune and play the violin perfectly. At the age of only 7 years, he had already written several compositions, so it’s not surprising that his father wanted to parade him at different courts in Europe. In 1763, the Mozart family were at the court of Maria-Theresa of Austria in Vienna. There, distinguished guests, Austrian power, princes and princesses are all there. That include Archduchess Marie Antoinette who was fascinated by the talent of the young boy, one year younger then her. Wishing to impress the princess with his violin, Wolfgang stumbles on the carpet, Some say that it is the floor that was waxed, and find himself on the ground. Marie Antoinette rushed to the child prodigy to help him getting up. To thank her, Mozart, who is embarrassed by the situation, said to her: Thank you ma'am, one day I will marry you. Maybe the future of the princess would have been ... happier if Maria-Theresa had taken the request seriously. If you liked my post, feel free to leave a comment bellow or share it. Another. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the tragic Henry VI. Half-orphaned at 9 months, orphaned with 15. Deposed with 40, Murdered with 50. He was Born #OnThisDay in 1421 as the only son of Henry V and Catherine of Valois. Here he is as a #kingbaby, in the arms of his advisers, precisely in the arms of Richard de Beauchamp,13th Earl of Warwick - my hero in the shining armor. With a gentle touch of his uncle John, in my opinion the most capable brother of Henry V. On the right obviously Henry Beaufort, great-uncle of the Baby King. On the left the two surviving uncles of Henry VI, John of Lancaster, Duke of Bedford and Humphrey of Lancaster, Duke of Gloucester. Half-orphaned Henry was before his first birthday already king of England and France, making him the youngest monarch in English history! #england #english #englishhistory #medieval #middleages #plantagenets #henryvi #lancaster #warsoftheroses #historylover #history #historian #happybirthday

The Winchester Food Tour today features another historic home known as The Boyd Home and also known as "Fair Mount". The property is located at 311 Fairmont Avenue in Winchester. In some of our earlier historic homes posts we described the early creation of the Town of Winchester, and those purchasing an "in-lot" (what is now known as the Historic District downtown), also required the conveyance of an "out-lot" that typically is found in the areas just around the downtown historic region. This property was just such an out-lot.⠀ ⠀ Read the full write up on the blog by simply clicking the link in our profile!⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #thisoldhouse #architecture #oldhomes #oldhouses #dreamhome #colonialhome #loghome #building #archtecturelovers #instagood #urban #design #cities #archilovers #architectureporn #archidaily #winchester #oldtownwinchester #winchesterva #historic #historichomes #historylover #visitwinchester #tastewinchesterhistory #historicwalkingtour

Although the name Cab Calloway might ring more bells, his older sister Blanche can be credited with helping to kickstart his successful jazz career. Years before Cab entered the music world, Blanche became a headliner in Chicago. Cab later joined her touring company and used this time to learn the tricks of the trade. As Cab became more well-known, he and Blanche competed in a good old-fashioned sibling rivalry. While eventually surpassing her in popularity, aspects of Cab’s musical and theatrical style were always reminiscent of Blanche’s. Throughout her career, Blanche led a few of her own bands, including Blanche Calloway and Her Clouds of Joy, Blanche Calloway and Her Joy Boys, and an all-girls orchestra. At the end of her career, Blanche became a disc jockey in Miami. Shipton, Alyn. Hi-de-Ho : The Life of Cab Calloway. When telegraph technology emerged, it boasted a new world of lightning speed communication. These messenger boys, however, were a necessary lag in getting a message to its final destination (think a 2G internet connection, but this connection also rides a bicycle). The boys worked 7 days a week for 10 hours each day, navigating a complex and often dangerous urban landscape. On average, the messengers were 14 years old, male, and white. Their age, gender, and ethnicity allowed them to efficiently and silently access places that women and other minorities could not. .
