To me, unfortunately the world revolves around the constant data stream coming into our heads. It’s a parallax effect of both positivity and negativity within society. Recently though, I have found that social media has been quite negative. I've been through fits of depression, fits of addiction, and feelings of worthlessness because of my interactions on social media. When scientists call it a drug, and the World Health Organization classifies it as a behavioural disorder, maybe that should be a wake up call. My mom keeps quoting my principal at my graduation — “spend time with the people you’re with”. I keep making fun of it, but as of recent it hits home quite close. Maybe we should all spend time with the people we’re with instead of constantly being bombarded with information around us.
As a photographer, my entire business essentially relies on my interactions and the advertisement I gain from posting my photos on various platforms. To me, that’s incredibly unfortunate due to the fact that my business literally feeds my addiction. As a student, social media seems to be my primary escape from work. Again, unfortunate — but what can you do when that’s the norm? Do you believe the world is being sucked into a spiral that we can’t get out of? -Excerpt from our industrial communications class final project. (COMM405) —————————————————
