Students who approach me for private yoga often have a clear idea about why they'd like to practise with me. These reasons include stress relief, poor sleep, weight loss, pain management, improve flexibility, strengthen a weak back/core, recovery from recent surgery or hospitalization etc. I have also had students request to practise pranayama (breath control / awareness), meditation and chakra healing with me. .
These are all valid reasons to take up a yoga practice. One is not better than the other although we like to think that someone who can speak the language of auras/chakras is somehow more evolved or enlightened than someone who wants to learn to move in a safe way after breaking their ankle. .
You have no idea what the practice is doing for someone in that moment, and in the weeks/ months/ years to come. They may not even know themselves. My approach is to welcome each student and create a safe space for them to do the work they need to do, providing guidance when necessary.
